Opacity maps? I've tried this once or twice but it always ended up looking terrible. You pull it off perfectly here.

same problem... cannot get good result, my try is 3 out of 10 maybe ((( pls share your experience in post work with people, maybe some tricks. thx

I'm not sure how long it took. I was working on 7 renderings at one time and reused a lot of components in all of them. Plus an architect gave me the office model... Someone else in my office built the context over the course of a week. And I create lots of new materials... My time: more than 20 hours less than 60 It took 50 hours to render 5000x3000

How long did it take you to create?

There's a mix of JPG black and white opacity mapping and some photos with TIFF alpha channels. Both work for me. Try lowering the BLUR to 0.1 Its all about the mask. If you get even a bit of the background around the person in photoshop, it will render with a halo.
