Hello Frances!! Congtats for your work. Can I ask wath version of Arion are you using? And are you using GPU rendering? One if you are, what kind of GPU do you have? Well thanks in advance, I'm looking forward to sich to Arion. Greetings from Mexico!!
I have some additional comments about render time compared to Vray and mental ray. I am often asked about render times, and unless I'm doing a specific test regarding benchmarks, I don't often pay attention to exact times. By doing a little investigation, I can calculate the exact times by adding up the number of autosaved images (15 minute increments) and figuring the number of minutes or hours. In the case of the full res 3k render, the number was 9.5 hours. That is the product of my setting up the render on a network node and letting it go over night or until I got around to looking at it and figuring it was done. But if I back-track through the autosaves, it is apparent that it was actually "done" at 5 hours. In other words, no appreciable change occurred after that time. I should also mention that all of the detail shots were done with the full scene. Time could be saved by hiding objects that are out of the view of the camera. But I didn't do that. I just roamed around taking shots. :)
Very cool. Thanks for the info Fran.
Thanks everyone. :) Girish, I created the blue painting in Photoshop with some help from a spiral-creating filter from Filter Forge and some other dirty tricks. I couldn't find the source for the one in the reference image, so I sampled the colors and tried to approximate it. The original is more flower-like and each petal is an outline, with the background showing through it, not solid. I wish I could find it. :)
top notch images Fran. Motivational stuff, i too was curious about the rug, glad to know it was poly modeled, I was baffled thinking of a way to make it with just a shader.

I must admit I took a double take on this comment :)
That carpet is bloody brilliant!
Very nice renderings. I really like the mini erco lamp idea. Wonderful texturing work overall. Where did you find the blue frame, kind of finger prints. Always a fan of your work.
I agree with Jonathan. Great stuff... and thanks for the technical info Fran. I might have to give Arion/Fry a go.
Fran, you definitely deserve artist of the week for this... great stuff!
Amazing render, looks very realistic!
Thanks Antoine. Render times were 1 to 2 hours (varied) for the detail shots, and about 9 hours for the 3000x2330 full view render. I really have no idea how long they would take to render in mental ray or vray. Although I do remember when I used to use Vray, render times were quite long if you enabled reflective caustics (I hope I got that right), which are disabled by default.
These are amazing!! The light to dark gradient from the window on the right in the first image is so smooth and realistic. How are the render times compared with mr or vray?

Thanks everyone. :) George, the large pillows are actually the back pillows for the couch. This is how they would look after being trounced by two little boys. :D
Beautiful work as usual Fran! Great attention to detail and the lighting is spot on. Well done.
Really exquisite - only thing I would say is that there are too many pillows! - they have taken over and there's no where to sit!

Oh, Fran, Fran... What to say? Superb, as usual.
Amazing attention to detail. Well done!
Thanks Joseph. :) The rug is poly-modeled for the seams and has some bump-mapping.
