You need to utilize mental ray proxies as much as possible. This way you could load your scene up with huge amounts of polys and still have a manageable render.

thanks I will give those trees a try. Any idea how the render times are on them? I've tried 3d trees before with the leaves done as planes with cutout maps, but the render times made them really undesirable.
