Haha, you should go tell Autodesk that they’re wrong then. There is no moire effect occurring in your attachment. There’s just an artful design resembling moire patterns. My apologies, Andrew. This isn’t the proper place to be discussing this issue.
Checkerboard is also not consider as moire effect if we see it from the one angle there I have attached the image which is a moire effect. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_gLGwMksL3Pk/SJlOOJLKoxI/AAAAAAAACXw/OAz7DgCuusk/s400/UNSTUDIO+front3.jpg http://i1.creativecow.net/u/84685/moire.png
I'm certain that this render demonstrates an example of the moire effect. In Advanced Maya Texturing and Lighting it states that "moire patterns [are] formed by texture details that are smaller than corresponding screen pixels" (123). When viewing this render at the preview resolution of roughly 900x900, there are definitely more tiles in a given region than my monitor has pixels. This phenomenon is what creates moire patterns. Further, refer to Maya's documentation regarding anti-aliasing: "A group of over-sampling methods for avoiding the unwanted visual effects or artifacts caused by limited display resolution. These aliasing effects include jaggies (staircasing along diagonal lines), moiré effects (checkerboards), and temporal aliasing (strobing) in animated scenes." You stated that moire effects/patterns cannot exist when "they are not similar all over in terms of spacing or pattern." Checkerboards are repetitious and are very similar to the tiles on this wall. Brennan this is not a moire effect these are the simple tiles moire effects are define when they are not similar all over in terms of spacing or pattern. Andrew show down-lighters look real increase the intensity of light make your steel stair more reflective and for caustics in water use caustic on water layer and throw some light through down-lighter in pool to spread the caustic all across. Else its very basic give your scene little mood. Waiting for the final result.
The strange pattern you're seeing on the left wall is known as the "moiré effect". Increase the size of the tiles - the current size isn't realistic. Also, make the wooden floor look rougher. I can see the reflection of the ladder and I fear that the floor might be deadly if wet. It's a nice render - VERY simple yet stylized. Good work!
