Try taking this image into photoshop and duplicating the layer with a screen blend. Apply a mask to that layer then you can paint highlights and brighten areas without much effort.

I really appriciate your comments. I had a dilemma myself about how much light will one fireplace and few candles produce.. My experiments are even darker!!

Lots of potential here, but its too dark. The viewer shouldn't strain to see the image. If you want to keep it mysterious, keep the edges like this, but cast more firelight on various subjects. You can do all this in Photoshop.
